Promoting the empowerment and inclusion of women with disabilities in Ethiopia
‘EWDNA changes lives’ is a phrase often heard from many women with disabilities during the coffee ceremony event, which is one of the organization’s most popular activities. In this event, women gather every two weeks to discuss current issues, such as the upcoming elections, sexual harassment faced by persons with disabilities on public transportation, or free reproductive health services offered by EWDNA’s partner. And slowly, our project’s women begin to feel empowered and start making plans for their future.
Kynnys supports the Ethiopian Women with Disabilities National Association (EWDNA), an organization based in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. The goal of the organization is to empower women with disabilities, support their education and employment, and promote accessibility in their environment. Kynnys is implementing this project in collaboration with The Martha Association.

Ababa Bacha, 32
Ababa is a busy woman. Together with her husband, she sells candles and incense near a church, takes care of her two children and home, and actively participates in EWDNA’s activities. Through Ababa, around ten new women with disabilities have joined EWDNA as members, because the message is clear: EWDNA changes the course of life. Eight years ago, Ababa’s situation was different. She was begging on the street. Now, we see a beautiful and smiling woman in front of us, who plans to educate her children well.
